About this survey
Thirty-eight long-period recording sites were laid out across central Australia in 2003, between about 133.8 and 143.0 degrees east and 19.7 and 24.7 degrees south. The footprint runs some 950 km east to west and 555 km north to south and straddles the Queensland and Northern Territory border. Roughly a third of the sites lie in the Territory, and the western limit is west of Alice Springs. The array is the central Australian campaign of 2003 of Ole Hanekop's 2006 Goettingen doctoral thesis, Large scale resistivity surveys combining magnetic and magnetotelluric observations: Examples from central Australia, supervised by Karsten Bahr and Fiona Simpson; the thesis's site table lists the thirty-eight sites at the positions served here. The fieldwork ran from July to October 2003 with ten five-channel instruments, Goettingen loggers with Magson fluxgate magnetometers and electric dipoles, sampling every 2 s, so the transfer functions served here are the magnetic part of a magnetotelluric campaign. The thesis reports three-dimensional conductivity models built from the array, identifying the major geological structures and drawing implications for the tectonic history of the region. The dense magnetic coverage also allowed magnetic transfer functions to be converted into magnetotelluric ones, a conversion that separates the electric and magnetic modes and can remove galvanic distortion from long-period magnetotelluric transfer functions. Vertical-field transfer functions survive for thirty-three of the sites, at up to four periods between 16.2 and 1,023.6 s; the other five sites have positions but no data, three of them (DAV, MON and COP) through instrument failures the thesis records. None of the sites matches a station of the earlier Australian arrays, though HAR sits about 3 km from Mt Riddock, occupied by a 1970s central Australian array.
Any Australian partners in the field programme remain to be identified. AusMT keeps the historical survey name for now; the thesis calls the work the central Australian campaign of 2003.
The served numbers are vertical-field transfer functions, or tippers, at up to four periods between 16.2 and 1,023.6 s, in the sign-reversed polar Parkinson convention. They are the field product of the thirty-eight site array reported in Hanekop (2006), Large scale resistivity surveys combining magnetic and magnetotelluric observations: Examples from central Australia, PhD thesis, Georg-August-Universitaet Goettingen (doi:10.53846/goediss-2673), whose Table A.1, p. 93, lists the station names and coordinates of the thirty-eight sites and whose Figure 4.4, p. 50, draws the induction arrows at the same four periods, without uncertainties. Geoscience Australia converted them into the form served here, and the coordinates come from the Geoscience Australia site locations workbook of 13 August 2015, sheet Long Period, which lists all thirty-eight sites to three decimal places. The original recordings are not held, and the national index records the time series as surviving but does not say where.
