Magnetotelluric transfer functions were accessed through AusMT, Australia's Magnetotelluric Data Portal (https://ausmt.auscope.org.au), enabled by AuScope and the Australian Government via the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).

Forty-three broadband magnetotelluric soundings were recorded in the Midlands of Tasmania between 16 February and 7 March 2010, in an array about 34 km east to west by 33 km north to south centred on the Lamont area east of Oatlands.

About this survey

Forty-three broadband magnetotelluric soundings were recorded in the Midlands of Tasmania between 16 February and 7 March 2010, in an array about 34 km east to west by 33 km north to south centred on the Lamont area east of Oatlands. Moombarriga Geoscience Pty Ltd acquired them for KUTh Exploration Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of KUTh Energy Ltd, as the third season of a geothermal exploration programme on special exploration licences SEL26/2005 and SEL45/2007, infilling the 2008 and 2009 deployments so that the project area carried three-dimensional coverage. The acquisition report gives a site separation of 1 to 3 km. Every sounding was remote referenced against another station of the same campaign rather than against a fixed base: each file names its reference site in its >INFO block, and 33 distinct reference records appear across the 43 files.

Recording used Phoenix Geophysics MTU-5A receivers with MTC-50 induction coils, four of the receivers across the season. The channels recorded were Ex and Ey on grounded dipoles of a nominal 90 m, Bx and By on coils at every site, and Bz on a coil at 26 of the 43 sites. Time series were written at three sample rates, 15, 150 and 2400 Hz, for an average of about 16 hours a station by the acquisition report and 11 to 30 hours measured from the recording windows the files carry. The coils were calibrated before the season and the calibrations were used in processing. Transfer functions were computed with the Phoenix SSMT suite and cross-power edited in MT-Editor version 0.99.2.68, using the coherence-based rejection of Jones and Jodicke (1984) and the remote reference method of Gamble, Goubau and Clarke (1979).

This package serves the 43 transfer functions lodged with Mineral Resources Tasmania, SITE01A to SITE43A, one per station. Each is a Phoenix cross-spectra file carrying one common grid of 80 frequencies from 320 Hz to 0.00034 Hz, from which impedance is derived at every station and tipper at the 26 that recorded the vertical field.

Data origin. The transfer functions served here are the 43 files of "MT Data 2010/EDIs.zip" inside Appendix 04 of Mineral Resources Tasmania company report 10_6115, the KUTh Exploration annual exploration report for 2010, downloaded as AnnualReport2010Appendix04_2010MTacquisition.zip and released open file under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia with Mineral Resources Tasmania as licensor. The raw time series behind them are in that same archive under "MT Data 2010/Time Series", 49 recordings of TS3, TS4 and TS5 files at 15, 150 and 2400 Hz with their TBL recording tables, alongside the box and coil calibrations under "MT Data 2010/Cals".
